[Peter heaves a sigh of his own. He'd already decided that he was going to go on this mission, already dedicated to seeing it through to the end, but hearing someone else breaking down his role in it just made the whole thing that much more intimidating. This wouldn't be the first time he'd tried to save the world, but the last time hadn't exactly ended very well for him. Or his entire universe.
He's trying not to let the doubts creep in, but all things considered, it's not easy to keep them at bay.]
Nick, I-- uh. God, there's a lot riding on this. Um. Okay. Yeah, I got this. I can... I can do this.
[I mean he sounds absolutely terrified, but he can totally probably do this.]
[Nick can hear that terror; he's fighting to keep some of it out of his own voice. He can't let himself fall apart now.]
You can do this. I wouldn't've called if I didn't think you could.
[Him more than most people in Hadriel -- certainly more than most people on the Guard. As Nick said, Peter has all the right skills for this job. Most importantly, he's been a presence at the lab, a friend to Alphys and Name. He's going into this for all the right reasons.
The fact he might not make it back is what makes this entire conversation hard. Nick has a lot of respect for Peter. He knows he should let him know, just in case. The old synth hates that kind of finality, hates thinking that any one of them going on this mission might not make it back. The Null will know what they're doing as soon as they get to it, and he has no doubt what they'll do next.
And with Fear taking them, and the way the exchange with Tranquility went... he's not confident the god will stick around if things get hairy. Peter knows the risks, though. Hell, if Nick thought he could do the job, he'd take his place in a heartbeat. That's just the kind of thing good people do -- and Peter is one of the best.]
This might be the last chance I get to say it, so I just wanted to say thanks... for everything you've done for this place. With any luck, this might be the end of it. This might be what makes this city finally safe enough for the ones who have nowhere else to go. That means a hell of a lot to a lot of people. It means a hell of a lot to me.
[He's still nervous, for sure, but Nick's confidence in him is helping Peter kind of gather his wits a little, helping him just stop and think. They were already better prepared to deal with the Null problem than anyone back home had been to deal with Thanos. Peter himself had had almost a year to get himself ready. He knew exactly what he had to do and how he had to do it, and he was good at improvising if it came down to it. He can do this. It's still scary, but he can do it.]
Thanks, Nick. I mean, I know you're thanking me right now, but I... You gave me a chance to really make a difference around here, y'know? Not many people are going to look at a guy bouncing around in spandex and take them seriously.
[He has to work a little humor into it, y'know. Ease tension and stuff. It may or may not work, but either way Peter takes a deep breath. He's as ready for this shit as he's ever going to be.]
Whatever it takes, we're gonna win this thing. I'll do everything I can to make sure of it.
Just... just do me a favor. If Fear comes back without us, kick him in the junk for me.
